Is CBT simply the flavour of the month or a passing fad? It’s one of the prominent psychological models around at the moment that generates praise and criticism alike, like anything else that rises in popularity. Even more ‘flavour of the month’ currently is Mindfulness or Mindfulness based Cognitive Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). And of course it’s important to note that none of these treatments including CBT are new. CBT stands on the shoulders of Freud & Adler. Adler said it’s not events that upset us. It’s our interpretation of events that upsets us. Mindfulness comes from Buddhist Tradition. ACT stands on the shoulders of CBT. Whether fashion or fad, the proof is in the science. Does CBT work? Research tells us it has a very sound and growing evidence base.
